After Powell spoke, Mayor Randall Woodfin shared thoughts of an aunt who’s lived in the area “longer than I’ve been alive” and seeing soot (or whatever floated down from those tainted skies) settling on clothes hung outside to dry. “For me, this is personal.”

He pulled up maps from his phone, maps obtained at a recent conference hosted by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, maps outlining health-related disparities between neighborhoods tainted by poverty, by the lingering effects of redlining, or by poisons settling from the sky and other neighborhoods, more affluent neighborhoods, neighborhoods without toxins.
