Remaking The Economy: Movement Economies

How do people not only develop a vision of a democratic economy rooted in values of solidarity, but come together to make that vision a collective reality? To address this question and discuss their contributions, four authors from NPQ’s summer economic justice magazine will explore the concept of movement economies and how movements can be effective systemic economic change agents.

Our panelists are: 

· Davarian Baldwin is the Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of American Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and author of In The Shadow of the Ivory Tower: How Universities Are Plundering Our Cities. 

· A-dae Romero Briones (Cochiti/Kiowa) is vice president of research and policy and directs the Native Agriculture and Food Systems Initiative at the First Nations Development Institute. 

· Johanna Bozuwa is executive director of the Climate and Community Project, a network that seeks to draw on expert climate research and work at the intersection of economic, racial, and climate justice policy. 

· Maurice Mitchell is national director of the Working Families Party, a leading movement theorist in the field, and a highly respected organizer and leader within the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) network.

This webinar will explore: 

· What do we mean by movement economies? 

· How have movements responded to the causes and effects of skyrocketing inequality? How should they respond? 

· How do you connect the what of economic systems change with the who and the how? 

· What does an intersectional approach to economic justice require? What lessons can be drawn on from historical experience? 

· Can movement energy coalesce into a cohesive vision? 

· What are the democratic economic structures social movements understand to be in their interests and worth fighting for?

The co-moderators for this webinar are NPQ economic justice editors Steve Dubb and Rithika Ramamurthy. Steve has worked with cooperatives and nonprofits for over two decades and has been both a student and practitioner in the field of community economic development. Rithika is the first elected president of the graduate student union at Brown, GLO-AFT Local 6516, and a founding member of Reclaim RI.
