In the face of the United States’ longstanding wealth gap and the lasting impact of “redlining,” the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) of 1977—which requires banks to serve low-to-moderate income communities near where they do business—remains one of the federal government’s foremost tools for channeling investment to historically underserved people and places. The CRA regulations recently underwent their most important update in nearly 30 years, revitalizing implementation of the statute. This panel discussion will delve into the CRA’s importance for economic equity and the major questions that could impact the future of CRA regulation.
