“Congress made an important stand last Friday but backed down too quickly. Democrats are running a high stake and risky gamble based on the assumption that the House of Representatives and the President also want a meaningful solution for “DACAmented” youth. It puts a lot of faith in Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan and Donald Trump. We will see very shortly if that faith is real or misplaced.
This is not an “either-or” moment, where we either fund defense or social programs. We must fund both. As the world’s richest country, a country able to give a $1.5 trillion tax cut to its wealthiest, our process of democracy must not overlook seniors, children, families, or immigrants.
On February 8th, the government may choose to export Dreamers from their home in America, a country they love, to places they have never known. If they do, Americans will have the final say in November.”
