It is not that such individuals cannot move forward, or never reach the top; just that, generally, it takes longer, happens less frequently and often represents a markedly more labour-intensive, even exhausting experience.
But thinking about privilege as a prevailing wind is not just more fetishisation of the top; our class backgrounds do not matter only in relation to who has the top salaries, or the most powerful jobs. Instead, privilege affects all sorts of life outcomes, in all sorts of ways and all parts of the class structure.
