Washington, DC – The National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s thoughts and prayers are with the families of Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana who are experiencing continuous and unprecedented flooding from Hurricane Harvey. Over six million people, more than the population of 33 individual states, live in the areas impacted by the storm.
“The NCRC community is especially concerned for the most vulnerable and historically voiceless communities’ in harm’s way”, said President and CEO John Taylor. “In Houston alone, 1 in 3 homes are in the “high-risk or “hazard” zones. If these houses are lost, the destruction will be comparable to New Orleans after Katrina.”
We encourage our members to focus their resources towards the most socially and environmentally vulnerable communities hit by the storm. Our members know that in rural counties– our communities of color and undocumented immigrants have less allies to rely on. Meanwhile, damaged refineries and toxic waste sites are already severely endangering the health and wellbeing to our communities along their fences.
“It is at times like this that the true spirit of being an American shines through. We help regardless of socioeconomic and racial differences. We know that this is what it means to be a decent human being; to help all in need of assistance. The NCRC community commits our resources, our advocacy, and our voice to protecting our neighbors from further devastation. We will advocate for Congress and others to show bipartisan leadership and pass relief for homeowners financially devastated by the storm. We will also encourage financial institutions, insurance companies, and other investors to come together to provide immediate relief and support” stated NCRC President and CEO John Taylor.
“To our friends in Harvey’s wake, we are with you now, and for the long haul.”
