The National Community Reinvestment Coalition indicated that three areas of Virginia are among the top ten most intensely gentrified cities. This report was released a few months after Amazon announced to build its second headquarters in Virginia Beach, which now has some residents worried about possible gentrification.

Students at Howard University express their frustration about the surrounding community using their private campus as a public dog park. One resident suggested that the University, which was founded in 1867, should move so he, who has not lived in the area before 1867, can walk his dog. Washington, DC the most intensely gentrified city, according to the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, and the gentrifiers are not coming quietly.

Many gathered at THEARC to celebrate Washington, D.C,’s Emancipation Day through an event titled “Emancipation Day Freedom School”. This event highlighted the past and present fight for educational and housing equity in the city and around the nation. In most recent decades, DC residents have underwent intense gentrification that led to about 20,000 Black Washingtonians displaced between the years of 2000-2013, according to the National Community Reinvestment Coalition.

In Washington, D.C., — the city with the highest intensity of gentrification — local residents have been combating cultural displacement in a cell-phone store that stopped playing Go-Go music due to complaints from new residents.

The National Community Reinvestment Coalition has shown that the Community Reinvestment Act has resulted in approximately $980 billion in community investment since 1996.
